How Many Quail Do You Need for Eggs?

If you’re raising quail for eggs, one of the first questions is how many birds you actually need.

The answer depends on how many eggs you want each day and how many people you are feeding.

How Many Eggs Do Quail Produce?

Quail can lay almost one egg per day under good conditions. This makes them a reliable source of eggs for small households.

They are moody little birds but if you make sure they have feed and the proper layout, they will keep producing for you, even in winter!

Estimating Your Egg Needs

For a small family, you may want around 6 to 12 eggs per day depending on usage. I use Japanese quail and 5 eggs is equivalent to an extra large chicken egg. I normally eat 12-15 for breakfast myself but I enjoy a big breakfast.

Recommended Number of Quail

A good starting point is:

  • 6–10 quail for light egg use
  • 10–20 quail for a small family
  • 20+ quail for consistent daily production

Starting small and scaling up is the best approach.

My outdoor setup allows for 32, and thats what I have for that enclosure. My breeder setup has 8 which I use for fertile eggs and hatching.

Factors That Affect Egg Production

Egg production can vary based on:

  • Feed quality!!
  • Lighting conditions
  • Stress levels
  • Clean environment

A tip: Quail love their worms, so any snacks you get is a bonus! it would make their yolks more orange as well.

Final Thoughts

The best way to determine your ideal number is to start with a small group and adjust based on your needs.

Quail are easy to scale, making them perfect for building a backyard food system over time.
