When I first started raising quail, I thought something was wrong because they kept chasing and pecking each other.
Turns out… it’s completely normal.
But there’s a point where it goes from normal to a problem.
🧠 What I Learned Pretty Fast
Quail WILL establish a pecking order.
There’s no avoiding that.
When I added new birds, there was always chasing for a bit. At first I tried to stop it, but honestly, that just made things worse.
Now I let it happen unless it gets out of hand.
⚠️ When It Becomes a Problem
The biggest issue I ran into was too many males.
That changes everything.
More males = more aggression, more chasing, and sometimes injuries.
Once I reduced the number of males, the whole flock calmed down.
🐔 What Actually Worked for Me
- Keeping more females than males
- Giving them enough space
- Letting the pecking order settle
That combination fixed most of the issues.
🧠 My Honest Take
Some fighting is normal.
If there’s no injuries, I don’t interfere anymore.
But if things start getting aggressive, it’s almost always a male ratio issue.
✅ Final Thoughts
Don’t panic when you see quail fighting.
Most of the time, it’s just them figuring things out.
But if it keeps going, look at your male-to-female ratio first.
